Beloved spouse, daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend; Sonya, in her 33rd year, after a courageous battle with breast cancer on Saturday, May 7, 2016. Sonya is profoundly missed by her spouse, Vernon Cochrane; her parents, Roy and Hilde Van Veen; her grandmother, Celes Van Veen; her aunts Ingrid (Brian) and Rebecca (Damian); her uncle George (Anne); her cousins Alex, Katie, Leandra, Paul, Phylicia, Shane and Shauna and by many other family and friends. Sonya was predeceased by her loving aunts Denise and Paula. Sonya attended University of Toronto Schools (Toronto), the University of Guelph (Guelph) and D’Arcy Lane Institute of Equine Massage Therapy (London) and later joined the faculty at D’AL where she became a respected and beloved teacher. Sonya centered her life around her love of horses. She was an accomplished dressage rider and made her career as an equine massage therapist, focusing her talents on rehabilitation of equine athletes, primarily in the Standardbred racing industry and in the worlds of dressage and hunter/jumper competition. Sonya’s family will receive friends at the Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon Street, Guelph on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 409 Paisley Rd., on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Hospice Wellington or the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society would be appreciated by the family.
