It is with heavy hearts that we share with you the passing of Hans Joachim Zappe on July 31, 2016 after a valiant fight against Leukemia. Hans will be dearly missed by his loving wife Edeltraut, and his two daughters, Judith (Hessel) VanderDuim and Linda (Greg) Brooks. The grandchildren, Karin, Erik (Laura), Daniel and Michael brought joy to Opa’s life. The children will miss his quick smile, words of wisdom, helping hands and games of chess and checkers.

Born on December 29, 1928 in Berlin, his life was one great adventure. In 1954 Hans immigrated to Canada, en route meeting Edeltraut who would become his soul mate, partner, best friend and wife of 60 years. Canada soon became his home and offered him opportunities to provide a good life for himself and family. Hans worked at various factories in Toronto and Guelph, retiring from Owen Cornings (Fiberglass) as an industrial mechanic/millwright. Hans was very active in the Guelph German Canadian Club since its inception, functioning for many years as a Board member and Treasurer.

The family would like to thank the health care team at GRRCC, the staff at GRH 6th floor, along with the staff and volunteers at Hospice Wellington for making his last weeks comfortable.

The family invites friends to the Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin St. N., Guelph, for visitation on Monday, August 8, 2016 from 10 to 11 a.m. Chapel service will follow at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice Wellington would be appreciated by the family. Donation cards are available at the funeral home (519-822-4731) or condolences may be left online at www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com.

Hans will be greatly missed, and holds a special spot forever in our hearts.
