Canada is currently experiencing an opioid overdose crisis. Rates of overdose death have increased exponentially over the past several years. The illicit opioid market has transitioned from prescription pills, to heroin, and now to fentanyl. The prevalence of fentanyl and its analogues is the largest contributing factor for the increase in overdose deaths. In response to this crisis, the Guelph Police Service Drug Enforcement Unit has undertaken concerted efforts to focus resources on disrupting the illicit fentanyl market.

In September 2019, the Drug Unit began an investigation into possible drug trafficking within an apartment building on Wellington Street West in Guelph. This led to CDSA search warrants being requested for two apartments.

On Sept. 19, 2019, the Guelph Police Service Tactical Unit executed the warrants. Two males and a female were subsequently arrested and a large quantity of drugs was seized. Total street value estimated at $40,000. Also seized was a functioning CEW, cash and stolen property.

A 60-year-old Guelph man and a 61-year-old Guelph woman have been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking – hydromorphone, possession for the purpose of trafficking – oxycodone, possession for the purpose of trafficking – morphine, possession for the purpose of trafficking - clonazepam and possession for the purpose of selling cannabis.

A 33-year-old Guelph man has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking – fentanyl, possession for the purpose of trafficking – morphine, obstruct police, carry concealed weapon (knife), possession of a prohibited weapon (CEW), possession of a weapon contrary to order (four counts), possession for the purpose of trafficking – hydromorphone, possession for the purpose of trafficking – oxycodone, possession for the purpose of trafficking – morphine, possession for the purpose of trafficking – clonazepam,  possession for the purpose of selling cannabis, and possession of stolen property under $5,000.
