A Guelph male faces a mischief charge after allegedly causing more than $8,400 in damage to the elevator in his downtown apartment building.

On Sept. 15, the male was loading groceries into the elevator when he was observed by another tenant forcefully slamming the door open, causing it to become inoperable. The property manager, who was in a nearby office, heard the commotion and recognized the tenant from video surveillance.

The cost to repair the elevator was more than $8,400. The tenant was located Sunday in the downtown area and arrested. A 50-year-old Guelph male is charged with mischief over $5,000. He will appear in a Guelph court Nov. 30.
