On Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017 at 1:53 a.m., police were contacted about a male entering cars on Vanier Drive. The suspect fled prior to police arrival. Police dog General was deployed and tracked the suspect through a school yard, several backyards and a park. The canine team recovered a backpack the suspect (allegedly) tried to hide in a backyard. The backpack had a number of stolen items in it. The canine track led to Bellevue Drive where the suspect was located and arrested without incident.
Erich Klug, a 21-year-old Guelph male was charged with possession of stolen property, trespass by night and three counts of breaching his probation order. He was later released and will appear in court on Oct. 31, 2017.
Over the weekend there were 13 vehicles reported entered by unknown persons across the city. Cash, personal papers, tools and jewelry, to name a few items, were taken.
Police continue to remind the public that for the most part, this crime is easily avoided by locking your cars, keeping valuables out of sight or removed from your vehicle and parked in a well-lit and visible area where possible.
