Cell phone stop ends in impaired charge

TOWNSHIP OF GUELPH/ERAMOSA — On Mar. 18, 2017 at approximately 3 p.m., members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped the driver of a Ford pickup truck for a cell phone infraction, on Alma Street in Rockwood in the Township of Guelph/Eramosa.

While speaking with the male driver, the officer detected the smell of alcoholic beverage.

A roadside screening device test was conducted which resulted in a fail. The male driver was placed under arrest and transported to a local OPP Operations Centre for further testing.

52-year-old James Flikkema, of Guelph/Eramosa, has been charged with driving with more than 80 mgs. of alcohol contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on Apr. 11, 2017 to answer to his charge.

A 90-day drivers licence suspension and a seven day impound of the vehicle were also invoked as per statute.
