A Guelph man faces an upgraded charge following a hit and run collision last month which caused the death of an elderly cyclist, Guelph police report.
At 1 p.m. Sept. 5, a female cyclist in her 70s was riding southbound on Victoria Road North when her bicycle collided with a southbound Ford sedan. The driver of the sedan quickly left the scene without checking on the cyclist.
The cyclist was transported to a Hamilton trauma centre where she succumbed to her injuries the following day.
The involved vehicle was located one hour after the collision parked at a residence west of downtown. Approximately 3:40 p.m. the same day a 35-year-old Guelph man was located at an address in the east end and arrested for failing to remain at a collision causing bodily harm.
That charge has since been upgraded to failing to remain at a collision causing death. Following subsequent investigation he has also been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with operating an unsafe vehicle.
