CAMBRIDGE - Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Highway Safety Division (HSD) - Cambridge Detachment, have laid charges after being called to a collision on Highway 401.

On Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, at approximately 5:14 a.m., the OPP received a call of a serious collision on Highway 401 westbound near Highway 6 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County.

The collision involved a commercial transport truck and a passenger vehicle. Investigators believe the two occupants of the passenger vehicle were outside their car that was stopped on a live lane on Highway 401. A transport truck subsequently collided with it resulting in massive damage to both vehicles. The transport truck spilled diesel fuel across all lanes of the highway as it came to rest on the left shoulder and was consumed by fire. The passenger vehicle was directed to the right side ditch. The driver of the truck and one of the occupants from the car were taken to hospital, the injures were later determined to be minor in nature.

An occupant from the passenger vehicle, a 17-year-old male from London, Ont., fled the scene and was located at a nearby business. He is facing charges unrelated to the collision. The youth was held for a bail hearing and is charged with possession of a controlled substance x5, fail to comply with recognizance, and fail to comply with a probation order x3.

A portion of the westbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed for approximately 11 hours for the investigation, cleanup and repaving of the road surface.
