Citizens chase down alleged thief

A Guelph male faces several charges after he was chased and caught while allegedly trying to steal a bicycle Tuesday night.

Guelph police received a call at 11:40 p.m. A resident of Stone Road West advised he caught a male in his backyard attempting to steal his bicycle. The male fled, but the caller and a neighbour gave chase and caught the male, holding him until police arrived a few minutes later.

Investigation revealed the male had also allegedly entered the victim’s motor vehicle and stolen a backpack and was in possession of a credit card in someone else’s name. As well the male is on conditions from an earlier bail release requiring him to remain in his residence between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

A 42-year-old Guelph male is charged with theft under $5,000, possessing stolen property, trespass by night, possessing identity documents and failing to comply with a release order. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.
