A Guelph male faces impaired driving and other charges following a driving complaint early Thursday.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Guelph police were dispatched to a complaint of a possible impaired driver in the area of Wellington Street West and Gordon Street. Police located the motor vehicle driving north on Edinburgh Road North and saw it twice swerving across the centre line into the oncoming lane.

Officers were able to catch up to the vehicle as it turned onto Willow Road and stopped it. Officers noted an odour of alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath, his eyes were partially closed and he was slurring his words to the extent officers couldn’t understand him. As the male got out of the vehicle he stumbled and had to steady himself using the door, says the police report.

The male was arrested and taken to the police station, where he refused to provide a breath sample.

A 37-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving, failing to provide a breath sample and several charges under the Highway Traffic Act. He will appear in a Guelph court July 23, 2021. His driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.
