Driver accused of sleeping behind the wheel faces impaired charges

On Jan. 15, 2021, at approximately 3:00 a.m. the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a single motor vehicle collision on Fifth Line in the Township of Guelph-Eramosa.

Upon arrival, police located a vehicle in the ditch with the engine running. The driver was observed to be sleeping behind the wheel.

Police spoke with the driver and determined that their ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol. The driver was placed under arrest and underwent further testing.

Michael Ivor Nunes, 53 years old of Mississauga, has been charged with operation while impaired - 80 plus, operation while impaired - alcohol or drug contrary to the Criminal Code, and two counts of driving while suspended contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

A 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension (A.D.L.S.) and seven-day vehicle impoundment was initiated as per statute. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario court of justice - Guelph on Feb. 5, 2021 to answer to the charges.
