Driver found asleep at the wheel, impaired charges follow

On Thursday Oct. 18, 2018 at approximately 5 p.m. Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded along with Guelph-Wellington Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to a report of a silver motor vehicle stopped in the live lane of the Hanlon Expressway at Speedvale Avenue in the City of Guelph. Witnesses advised that the male driver was unconscious behind the wheel and the locked vehicle was in gear and slowly creeping forward.

Emergency workers were able to gain access to the vehicle and rouse the driver. After a brief interaction with the male it was determined that his ability operate a motor vehicle was impaired by drug. The male was arrested and taken to a local hospital as a precaution and later transported to an OPP Operation Centre for further testing. Unknown drugs along with drug paraphernalia were also seized from the vehicle.

28-year-old Cody Poulin of Welland has been charged with Driving while Ability Impaired by Drugs contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. A 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (A.D.L.S.) and 7-day Vehicle Impoundment was initiated as per statute. The accused is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on November 16, 2018 to answer to the charge.
