Fraud Friday: 10 tips to protect yourself

  1. Businesses should avoid using free web-based e-mail accounts. For better security features, establish a company domain name and use it to establish company e-mail accounts in lieu of free, web-based accounts.
  2. Be careful what you post to social media and company websites, especially job duties and descriptions, hierarchal information, and out-of-office details, as that information can be used in Business Executive Scams.
  3. Be careful what you post to social media, personal information can be used to make you a target for Fraud.
  4. Do not use the “Reply” option when responding to e-mails about payment details. Instead, use the “Forward” option and either type in the correct e-mail address or select it from your e-mail address book to ensure the intended recipient’s correct e-mail address is used.
  5. Always verify changes in payment information and requests for the transfer of funds. When verifying be sure to use previously known contact information or obtain it from a reliable source, not the contact information provided in the e-mail request. 
  6. Beware of irregular email requests for “urgent” fund transfers. Always verify that the request is legitimate with personal contact prior to sending any money. Be sure to use previously known phone numbers, not the ones provided in the e-mail request.
  7. Beware of unsolicited emails that are prompting you to click on an attachment or link as they can contain viruses and spyware.
  8. Watch for spelling and formatting errors in emails.
  9. Be cautious of items offered through online classified ads for extremely low prices. Remember - If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  10. Beware of sellers from overseas
