Winter driving reminder, injured child, calls for service

The following are news releases issued by the Guelph Police Service:

It appears that even the relatively minor amount of snowfall made the first part of the morning commute yesterday a little more hectic one for collisions. Between 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., police were investigating six collisions that had occurred around the city. For the rest of the entire day there were another seven.

The Guelph Police will continue to remind drivers that winter driving season is upon us and everyone needs to make adjustments to allow for the change in road conditions. Those adjustments need to include some simple steps;

  • Leave earlier - Give yourself more time to get to where you are going to allow for a slower/longer drive

  • Slow down and give yourself more distance to stop when you are following other vehicles. Under winter driving conditions even driving at the posted speed limit will require more distance to stop.

  • Check to make sure that all your exterior lighting is turned on- not just the running lights which a default setting for many model of cars.

  • Properly defrost your all of your vehicle’s windows and clear off any snow before you head out on the road - Having your exterior lights covered by snow and using a little spot to look out your windshield to drive until the rest of the windshield defrosts is an unsafe condition to operate your motor vehicle.

  • Get snow rated tires on your vehicles – they are specifically engineered to enhance driving performance in winter conditions especially when it comes to stopping and road traction. They do make a difference.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 14, police, fire and paramedic personnel were called to a Willow Road home where a seven year old boy had fallen down the space in the spiral staircase from one floor to the other. The boy had sustained some head trauma but was conscious and talking when he was transported to Guelph General Hospital. He was later air-lifted to a Hamilton hospital. At this time the extent of his injuries is not known and police are not investigating this unfortunate accident further.

Over the course of the day on December 14, 2017 the Guelph Police Service responded to 229 calls for service.
