On May 12, 2016 at approximately 9:09 a.m., the Guelph Fire Department responded to a reported fire on the 7th floor of 2 Quebec Street. Units from the Guelph Fire Department responded with all stations and upon arrival found a fire in an electrical panel on the 7th floor. Crews advanced attack lines and encountered heavy smoke and fire in the hallway.

The 13 story building had to be evacuated and only tenants from the 5th floor and below where allowed to remain. Alternate accommodations where arranged by Red Cross for displaced tenants in cooperation with Guelph Transit.

The Ministry of Labour along with ESA where called in to investigate further.

The cause of the fire along with an estimate of damage is still under investigation by Fire Prevention.

It is expected that the tenants may be able to return some time today pending review.
