Traffic stop and citizen complaints lead to two impaired driving arrests

Centre Wellington Township and Hamilton men charged with impaired driving offenses in separate incidents

GUELPH-ERAMOSA TOWNSHIP - On Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018 at approximately 7:05 p.m. a Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer investigated the driver of a black pick-up truck on Wellington Road 26 near Side Road 15 for a Highway Traffic Act violation.

While speaking with the male driver police determined that he was under the influence of alcohol.  A Roadside Screening Device Test (ASD) was conducted which resulted in a fail. He was arrested and brought to a local OPP Operations Centre for further testing.

33-year-old Daniel Payne of Centre Wellington Township has been charged with Over 80 mgs contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. A 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (A.D.L.S.) and 7-day Vehicle Impoundment was initiated as per statute.

He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on Oct. 5, 2018.

MAPLETON TOWNSHIP - On Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 at approximately 9:15 p.m. the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received numerous reports of a vehicle travelling northbound on Highway 6 at a high rate of speed as well as all over the road.

Police located the brown sedan at Highway 6 near Wellington Road 17 and observed it veer into the oncoming lane. Officers stopped the motor vehicle and while speaking with the male driver police formed the opinion that he was under the influence of alcohol.

A Roadside Screening Test (ASD) was conducted which resulted in a fail. He was arrested and brought to a local OPP Operations Centre for further testing.

41-year-old Jason Routledge of Hamilton has been charged with Over 80 mgs contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. A 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (A.D.L.S.) and 7-day Vehicle Impoundment was initiated as per statute. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on Oct. 5, 2018. 

If you suspect someone is driving while their ability to operate a motor vehicle is impaired, either by drug or alcohol, call police at 911 to report it.
