Impaired charge after city worker almost hit by vehicle

Two Guelph men were arrested for impaired driving overnight, including one who almost hit city workers installing a new Pride crosswalk downtown, Guelph police report.

Approximately 2 a.m., a vehicle left the downtown area. As it approached the intersection of Norfolk Street and Waterloo Avenue, the vehicle mounted a median before re-entering the roadway. The vehicle drove over construction signs and continued through the intersection past the workers, police report.

The vehicle was stopped a short distance away and the driver was showing signs of impairment. He failed a roadside breath test and was transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 19-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and novice driver having alcohol in his system. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 90 days.

Earlier in the night, approximately 10:45 p.m., an officer patrolling on Victoria Street North observed a sports car driving erratically, nearly striking the median on two occasions. As the officer followed the vehicle, it was observed to strike two parked vehicles and continue driving.

A traffic stop was conducted and the driver showed obvious signs of impairment. He failed a roadside breath test and was transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 32-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.
