Keswick man accused of defrauding Guelph business

Police say he selected merchandise from store shelves and returned them for store credit on four separate occasions

On Dec. 3, 2019 at 9:12 p.m., an adult male entered a store located near the intersection of Woodlawn Road West and Woolwich Street in the City of Guelph. The male selected numerous pieces of merchandise, attended to the service desk and [allegedly] returned the merchandise, receiving a store credit of $1,776.80.

[It is alleged that] the male proceeded to commit identical crimes at the same store over the next few weeks. He received store credit of $993.21 on Dec. 9, $816.14 on Dec. 13, and $1,422.23 on Dec. 17.

On Jan. 22, 2020, after discovering the ongoing fraud, store employees contacted the Guelph Police Service.

On Jan. 27, 2020, the male turned himself into the Guelph Police Service station and was arrested.

A 36-year-old Keswick male has been charged with four counts of fraud under $5,000.

He will appear in court on March 13, 2020.
