Man charged with assaulting police officer

On Jan. 31, 2018 at approximately 3:30 p.m., acmember of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attempted to stop a driver in a stolen pick-up at the Tim Hortons, in the Town of Palmerston.

The suspect rammed the police cruiser causing damage to the rear driver's side door. The officer was not injured. The suspect then fled the scene. The officer followed the suspect to attempt to stop him however discontinued the pursuit for public safety reasons. The stolen truck was later located in Blyth and had been set on fire.

The suspect was identified through investigation as 35-year-old Christopher Hutchinson of Perth South. A warrant has been issued for his arrest and he is currently in custody with another police service.

He will be charged with:

  • Flight while pursued by peace officer
  • Assault a peace officer with a weapon
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
