Human trafficking is a criminal offence that, very simply put, is selling another human being, most often for either sexual purposes or labor exploitation. These crimes target vulnerable persons by repeatedly victimizing them.

Often the victims don’t initially identify themselves as such and the actual numbers of people being affected are not known.

The Guelph Police Service remains dedicated to fighting human trafficking in our community by partnering with other police services and community agencies to support victims and assist them in escaping their situation while ensuring their safety.

On Apr. 21, 2017, Jonathan Dorvilus, a 34-year-old man from Quebec, was sentenced in a Guelph Superior Court for offences relating to human trafficking. He plead guilty to charges laid on Feb. 7, 2016 which included Receiving Material Benefit from Human Trafficking.

He was given a jail sentence of 22 months. After serving the remainder of this sentence, he faces several unrelated charges in other jurisdictions.

Anyone who may have information about Human Trafficking is asked to contact the Guelph Police Service at 519-824-1212 for assistance or advice. Anonymous tips can be left at Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submitted online.
