Man suspected of texting while driving charged with impaired

CENTRE WELLINGTON - On Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018 at approximately 4:50 p.m., a member of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police was on general patrol in Fergus when he observed a male driver that appeared to be texting while stopped at the intersection of St. David Street North and Garafraxa Street East.

The officer conducted a traffic stop and while speaking with the driver, he formed the opinion that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. A roadside screening device test was conducted which resulted in a fail. He was arrested and brought to a local OPP Operations Centre for further testing. An open container of liquor was also seized that was located within reach of the driver.

Twenty-two-year-old Romko Sarabura of Mississauga has been charged with driving with over 80 mgs of alcohol in 100mL of blood contrary to the Criminal Code. He is also charged with drive hand-held communication device contrary to the Highway Traffic Act, and driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor contrary to the Liquor Licence Act. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Court on Sept. 14, 2018 to answer to the charges.

 A 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment was initiated as per statute.
