On the evenings of September 8 and 9 between the hours of 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., the Guelph Police Service conducted a RIDE program in the City of Guelph.

Weekend R.I.D.E

On the evenings of September 8 and 9 between the hours of 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., the Guelph Police Service conducted a RIDE program in the City of Guelph. 880 vehicles were checked by officers with 5 roadside screening tests being administered. All 5 drivers were found to be within the legal limit.

Police had to remind several passengers in vehicles who were not wearing their seat belt of the importance of doing so.  All were advised of the $325.00 fine for not wearing your seat belt.

RIDE Officers encountered several individuals who had either a designated driver or planned for a safe ride home prior to going out for the evening.

Guelph Police would like to remind drivers that they will continue to conduct random spot checks between now and the holiday season for persons driving under the influence of alcohol.  Registering breath samples over 80 mgs of alcohol per 100 mls of blood will result in an immediate 90 day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension.  Convictions for impaired driving and driving with over 80 mgs will both result in a minimum of 12 month driving prohibition.

Police alerted to break in

On Sept. 9, 2017 at 6:50 p.m., Guelph Police went to a building located on Cardigan Street after passerby’s heard glass smash and saw a man climb into the building. Police arrived and entered the building with K9 Charger leading the way. The man was located inside and arrested. A subsequent search discovered a small quantity of marijuana. Continued investigation discovered the reason why the man broke into the building which led to him being charged with criminal harassment.

Mikhail Belkin, 33 years old of Markham has been charged with break and enter, criminal harassment and possession of a controlled substance. He was held in a custody pending a bail hearing on Sept. 10, 2017.

Dangerous driving charges

In midafternoon on Sept. 10, a grey Mazda Tribute struck a Ford Focus in the rear end in the area of Willow Road and Silvercreek Parkway. The Mazda then continued to drive away without stopping and the driver of the Ford followed it and called police. Before police could arrive, the Mazda then struck two other stopped vehicles on Paisley Road. Fortunately no one was seriously injured in this incident.

Deanna Winterkorn, 52 years old from Guelph, was arrested and charged with dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, breach of probation and driving under suspension. She was later released and will appear in court on Oct. 27, 2017.  

Trespass incident leads to criminal charges

On the evening of Sept. 9, security staff at a downtown bank observed a male that had been previously trespassed from the bank property and called police to have the male removed. When police arrived and spoke with the male in an attempt to simply get him to leave the premise, he refused and a struggle ensued.

The 23-year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged with assault, resist arrest, assault police, breach of probation and trespassing. He was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in bail court.

Over the course of the weekend, the Guelph Police Service responded to 684 calls for service.
