Homecoming weekend kept officers busy

The following news releases were issued by the Guelph Police Service:

Fatal collision

On Sept. 23, 2017 at approximately 6:25 p.m., a Mazda M3 was travelling on Wellington Street, in Guelph and was involved in a collision with a motorcycle that was also travelling on Wellington Street. The driver of the motorcycle succumbed to his injuries on scene. The driver of the Mazda suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Guelph General Hospital.

Break and enters

On Sept. 23, 2017 at 1:51 p.m., Guelph Police went to a Grange Street residence for a break and enter in progress. A resident was home when the culprit(s) entered the unlocked rear patio sliding door.  A female was observed by the homeowner on the deck dropping the purse that she had (allegedly) just stolen. The female ran, last seen west bound towards Regent Street. A MacBook Pro computer and iPhone were stolen from just inside the home.

The female is described as white, blonde, 5’6”-5’8”, thin and wearing athletic style clothes including a black head band.

At approximately 8 p.m. on Sept. 24, a Gordon Street homeowner called police to advise that someone had broken into the family garage and could still be heard inside. Police arrived and apprehended an 18-year-old Guelph male inside the garage.

The male is charged with break and enter and two counts of breach of probation. He was held in custody to appear in bail court.

Mischief arrest

At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Sept. 23, security personnel at a Chancellor’s Way building observed a male shattered a second-storey window when he punched his fist through it. The male was pointed out to police who were on scene. The male declined medical treatment to his injured hand and was arrested by police.

Tomasz Knapczyk, a 22-year-old Mississauga male, was charged with being intoxicated in a public place and mischief. He was later released to appear in a Guelph courtroom on Nov. 7, 2017.

Man arrested after window smashed

Just before noon on Sept. 24, a male walked by the window of a Wellington Street restaurant and gestured at patrons inside before he threw a large wrench (through) the front window. The window shattered and fortunately patrons inside were not hurt by glass fragments.

The 35-year-old Guelph male was later located a short time later in the area and arrested. He was charged with mischief and breach of probation and was held in custody to appear in bail court.

Disturbance arrest

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 23, there was a disturbance at a Gordon Street address where it is alleged that a man was assaulted by another male who initially left and then returned.

Police investigated and arrested 26-year-old Brandon Alexander Speirs of Guelph for assault. He was later released to appear in court on Nov. 3, 2017.

Calls for service

It was Homecoming weekend and it should come as no surprise that there was an extremely high call volume that challenged police resources. Over the course of the weekend the Guelph Police Service responded to 944 calls for service.
