The Special Investigations Unit has terminated the investigation into the Aug. 3, 2017 incident where a Guelph bank was robbed.
On Dec. 12, 2018, the S.I.U. notified the Guelph Police and released the following statement:
On Aug. 3, 2017, an attempted bank robbery prompted a massive police response in the City of Guelph. In the meantime, the suspects (allegedly) robbed another bank. Soon after police located the suspect vehicle, it veered into the lot of a mechanic’s shop where it collided with a raised curb and pole.
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against a Guelph Police Service officer in relation to the serious injury sustained by one of the passengers in the vehicle.
Director Loparco said, “I wish to make note of the efficient and professional behaviour of the members of the GPS in their concerted effort to apprehend the alleged bank robbers. Their behaviour, which involved the use of a very minimal amount of force, in the successful apprehension of these parties was commendable in the circumstances and should be a standard towards which all police services strive.”
