TOWN OF ERIN - On June 11 and June 13, 2019, Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Traffic Management Unit (TMU) was engaged in an enforcement initiative in the village of Erin. A number of public complaints about speeding, aggressive driving and other unsafe driving practices have led Wellington County OPP to address these issues.

The zero-tolerance, traffic enforcement event is geared to make our roads safer. Through a combination of high and low visibility enforcement operations; aggressiveness, distractedness and speeding are just a few of the dangers on the road that will all be addressed.

"We targeted the 'Big 4' (impaired operation, speeding, seat-belts, and distracted driving) as they significantly endanger drivers on our highways and we also looked for other driving offences that needed correcting." Wellington County OPP, Traffic Management Unit Manager, Sgt. Darryl Porterfield.

As a result of the two day initiative, OPP laid 36 charges including 21 for speeding, eight seat belt offences and two stop sign related offences. The high police presence also promoted other drivers to engage in safe driving practices.

This initiative highlights the fact that the OPP's concern for highway safety mirrors that of the residents of Erin. They saw a problem, reported it and allowed officers to calm some aggressive driving behaviours.

If you know an area were driving safety is an issue, please call OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or your local police service.
