Finishing a year late but nearing completion, the renovated Guelph Police headquarters is currently still within budget, says a top city manager.
City staff has been watching the budget of the police headquarters project very closely, said Kealy Dedman, Guelph’s Deputy CAO of Infrastructure, Development and Enterprise.
On Friday, city staff will be releasing its first quarter update and Dedman told GuelphToday by email on Monday that the project has not exceeded budget but is ‘very close’ to budget.
The police headquarters is currently closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Most recently, the communications centre was successfully transitioned back into the headquarters after being temporarily operated out of the Clair Road Emergency Services Centre.
The project is expected to be completed in the spring, one year later than originally scheduled and four years after construction began.
In December, an update on the city’s major capital projects stated the police headquarters project “could exceed the budget.”
The risk of it exceeding the budget was attributed at the time to unexpected conditions that are part of renovating an aged building.
In the December report, conditions that put the budget at risk of being exceeded was "demolition within the existing building with the potential to encounter unforeseen conditions."
