In the past year, Canadians have been witness to the emergence of the opioid drug fentanyl that has been found to be responsible for an alarming number of accidental overdose deaths among opiate users in Western Canada.

Law enforcement agencies have documented the steady eastward trend of the drug as it has started to be found not only in Ontario but in the Waterloo-Wellington region.

In the last few days there have been three incidents in the City of Guelph that have raised some concerns.

While the incidents cannot yet be confirmed as directly attributed to fentanyl, in the interests of public safety, the Guelph Police Service wants to pro-actively advocate with other front line agencies for increased awareness and diligence for any persons who may be at risk due to their use of illicit drugs.

Fentanyl is in our community and every effort should be made to minimize its potentially deadly consequences.
