Police kept busy with weekend RIDE checks

Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was again making reduce impaired driving everywhere (R.I.D.E.) programs a priority throughout the weekend, setting up several spot checks throughout the county and finding five drivers operating a motor vehicle despite being impaired by alcohol.

On Dec. 15, 2017 members of the Wellington County OPP were conducting a R.I.D.E. check on County Road 124 at Winston Churchill Boulevard, Town of Erin. At approximately 8:15 p.m. the driver of a Honda entered the R.I.D.E. check

While speaking with the male driver, officers formed the opinion that he was under the influence of alcohol. A roadside screening test was conducted which resulted in a fail. He was arrested and brought to a local OPP Operations Centre for further testing.

Thirty-seven-year-old Christopher Adam Clark of Erin has been charged with driving with over 80 mgs of alcohol in 100mL of blood contrary to the Criminal Code. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on Jan. 9, 2018 to answer to the charge.

On Dec. 16, 2017 members of the Wellington County OPP were conducting a R.I.D.E. check on the south bound lanes of the Hanlon Expressway, Guelph. At approximately 1:40 a.m., the driver of a 2007 Chevrolet Impala entered the R.I.D.E. check.

While speaking with the male driver, officers formed the opinion that he was under the influence of alcohol. A roadside screening test was conducted which resulted in a fail. He was arrested and brought to a local OPP Operations Centre for further testing.

Twenty-seven-year-old Tyler Matthew Winer of Puslinch has been charged with driving with over 80 mgs of alcohol in 100mL of blood contrary to the Criminal Code and two counts of driving while under suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on Jan. 12, 2018 to answer to the charges.

At approximately 7:40 p.m. on Dec. 16, 2017, members of the Wellington County OPP were conducting a R.I.D.E check on County Road 124 and Jones Baseline. A 2008 Ford being driven by a male party entered the R.I.D.E. check.

While speaking with the male driver, officers formed the opinion that he was under the influence of alcohol. A roadside screening test was conducted which resulted in a fail. He was arrested and brought to a local OPP Operations Centre for further testing.

Forty-six-year-old James Proctor of Guelph has been charged with fail to provide a sample contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada and is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on Jan. 12, 2018 to answer to the charge.

On Dec. 17, 2017 members of the Wellington County OPP were conducting a  R.I.D.E. check on Brock Road South near Cockburn St. Township of Puslinch. At approximately 10:40 p.m., the driver of a 2008 Toyota entered the R.I.D.E. check.

While speaking with the male driver, officers formed the opinion that he was under the influence of alcohol. A roadside screening test was conducted which resulted in a fail. He was arrested and brought to a local OPP Operations Centre for further testing

Forty-three-year-old Daniel Brennan of Waterdown has been charged with driving with over 80 mgs of alcohol in 100mL of blood contrary to the Criminal Code and is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on Jan. 18, 2018 to answer to the charge.

On Dec. 17, 2017 members of the Wellington County OPP were conducting a  R.I.D.E. check on Brock Road South near County Road 34,Township of Puslinch. At approximately 11:40 p.m. the driver of a 2016 Toyota entered the R.I.D.E. check.

While speaking with the female driver, officers formed the opinion that she was under the influence of alcohol. Officers made the demand for the roadside screening test which the driver refused.

Twenty-eight-year-old Nancy Brettone-Westgarth of Kitchener has been charged with fail to provide a sample contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada and is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on Jan. 9, 2018 to answer to the charge.

In all of the above cases a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension (A.D.L.S.) and seven-day vehicle impoundment was initiated as per statute.
