Man arrested after lengthy standoff

11:42 p.m. update

Guelph Police report that a man has been apprehended without incident.

Police release:

"On Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016 at approximately 2 p.m., Guelph Police entered into an investigation involving an individual who barricaded themselves.

After lengthy negotiations, police were able to safely apprehend the individual. There are no injuries as a result of this incident.

Please note, there was never a public safety issue at any time. Police operations in the area have now concluded. The Guelph Police Service would like to thank the neighbourhood for their patience and understanding in this matter."

9:55 p.m. update

Police are still on the scene. Remain gathered in lobby of apartment complex. Occasionally checking on outside window of basement apartment in question.

8:36 p.m. update

Police are still on the scene in the lobby of 81 Emma Street.

A man has apparently barricaded himself in a basement apartment.

8:19 p.m. update

A witness reports police arrived at 81 Emma Street after an altercation.

"A man was mowing the lawn when another man came out of the building with a golf club," said the witness who declined to identify himself. "He was apparently upset about the noise."

The golf-club-wielding man hit a pickup truck belonging to the man who was mowing the lawn.

The man who was mowing the lawn then hastily departed in his truck as the other man went back inside 81 Emma Street. 

Shortly after police arrived on scene and entered the building.

The Guelph Police Mobile Command Unit is currently on the scene at 81 Emma Street

Police appear to be conducting a search in and around the 2-storey apartment building, reports GuelphToday's Tony Saxon, who is on site.

Tactical squad officers are among the Guelph Police Service Officers involved in the operation, says Saxon.
