Man posing as an ‘Uber’ driver charged

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on April 18, two women were leaving a downtown restaurant when they accepted a ride from a man who was posing as an “Uber” driver.

They agreed on a price for the ride but after they got in the car and began to head to their destination, the driver increased the price.

When they arrived at the destination, the women paid the original agreed upon price and left the car.

The driver did not like that and took a water bottle and threw it, smashing the front window of their Victoria Road residence.

The women called police and provided a description of the car and driver who police were fortunately able to locate a short time later back in the downtown core.

Adam Rogers, a 35-year-old Guelph man, was arrested for mischief and further charged under the Highway Traffic Act for picking up passengers for compensation without proper authority. He was released at the scene to appear in court at a later date.

Legitimate taxi services in Guelph are bound by a number of regulatory restrictions that every driver and vehicle must adhere to legally operate in the City of Guelph.

Those regulations are not in place simply to protect you from any sort of ‘fare gouging’ but also offer you a level of personal safety in knowing they are identifiable and accountable to those regulations.

Please consider the added value of these licensed taxis when you are making a decision on how you want to get home.

There may be some potentially perilous costs for saving a few minutes of your time and a few dollars in your wallet if you chose an ‘alternative way’ to get home.
