It's that time of year again and Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists to take extra care on our roads and highways as winter weather is quickly approaching.

Environment Canada has issued a snow squall watch for areas including the northern parts of Wellington County. There is the possibility of snow squalls developing Thursday evening and continuing into the day on Friday. Roads could become icy and slippery as temperatures dip below freezing.

OPP are urging motorists to prepare for the changing weather by ensuring vehicles are ready and snow tires are on. Plan ahead and drive according to weather conditions.

Some tips for winter driving:

  • Check weather and road conditions often
  • Keep a safe distance behind snow plows
  • Install winter tires
  • Slow down and give yourself extra travel time
  • Clear snow and ice from your vehicle
  • Keep a full tank of gas
  • Create a "survival kit"

A reminder as well please DO NOT call the Provincial Communications Centre (PCC) for road and weather conditions as police do not provide this information. Calling the PCC ties up phone lines that others depend on for emergency situations.

Slow down and make safety your priority.
