Police say bad driving leads to pair of impaired charges

Two Guelph residents were arrested for impaired driving on the weekend after police officers noted their bad driving.

On Saturday about 1:25 a.m., a Guelph police officer was driving on Gordon Street when he noted a motor vehicle make a wide left turn onto Edinburgh Road South, striking the curb with the passenger side tires. The officer caught up with the vehicle on Edinburgh Road South and noted the vehicle travelling well above the speed limit and was weaving within and outside its lane. The driver was stopped and found to be showing signs of impairment including slurred speech and a strong odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath.

Breath tests at the police station indicated he had more than double the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 37-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation and impaired operation – blood alcohol concentration. His driver’s license was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court April 23.

On Sunday about 6:40 p.m., Guelph police were dispatched to a business parking lot on Woodlawn Road West. An off-duty Waterloo Regional Police officer called to report she had been following a suspected impaired driver from Breslau. She had asked the female to turn off her vehicle after observing she was unsteady on her feet at a gas station, but the driver ignored her.

Guelph police arrived and detected a strong odour of alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. She was transported to the police station where breath tests confirmed she had more than the legal limit of alcohol in her system.

A 40-year-old Guelph female is charged with impaired operation and impaired operation – blood alcohol concentration. Her driver’s license was immediately suspended for 90 days and her vehicle impounded for seven days. She will appear in a Guelph court June 8.
