A Guelph man faces an impaired driving charge after passing out Wednesday morning at a red light in the city’s downtown.

About 11:40 a.m., a passerby called police after finding the male unconscious in the driver’s seat of his vehicle at Wyndham Street North and Surrey Street East. The vehicle was still in drive and the male’s foot on the brake.

Police responded quickly and noted drug paraphernalia, including a rubber tourniquet and syringes, around the driver. Officers formed the opinion he was impaired by drugs and transported the male to Guelph General Hospital to be medically cleared.

A 36-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation. His driver’s license was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court May 4, 2021.
