Theft of AED leads to multiple charges

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on February 22, police received information from security staff at the Old Quebec Street Mall about a male that had stolen an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) from a second floor hallway. The theft was captured on video and police were able to obtain a photograph of the suspect.

Two hours later, police located that same male in the washroom of a Gordon Street restaurant and arrested him for theft. During the search of the man, the AED was recovered along with a quantity of substances believed to be methamphetamine and marihuana. He also was in possession of two cans of ‘bear spray’.

The 33 year-old Guelph man is charged with theft under $5000, possession of stolen property, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, six counts of breach of recognizance, carry a concealed weapon and six counts of breaching a weapons prohibition order. He was held in custody to appear for a bail hearing.
