On Nov. 13, 2019, at approximately 11:30 p.m. a Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer observed a heavily damaged, beige sedan being driven on Victoria Road South near Clair Road in the City of Guelph.

The vehicle's engine was smoking and its deflated tires were casting sparks on to the highway. When officers intervened the driver attempted to evade police but was cornered on a 'dead-end' street.

The officers spoke to the driver and formed the opinion that they were impaired by alcohol. The driver attempted to resist the arrest but was apprehended and brought to a local OPP operations centre for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Lovepreet Singh Dhesi, 23 years old of Erin has been charged with Impaired Operation, Impaired Operation - 80 Plus (mgs of alcohol in 100mL of blood), Flight from Police, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Resist Arrest, Fail to Remain, and Use Unauthorized Plate.

A 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (A.D.L.S.) and seven-day vehicle impoundment was initiated as per statute. The accused is scheduled to appear in Guelph at the Ontario court of justice on Dec. 17, 2019. Investigations also determined that the accused had struck an object on Clair Road that had caused the extensive damage to the vehicle. No other vehicles were involved.

If you suspect someone is driving while their ability to operate a motor vehicle is impaired by drugs or alcohol, please call 911 immediately.
