Stopped after allegedly running a red light, a 31-year-old Kitchener man faces charges that include resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, possession of prohibited weapons and possession of stolen property.

Guelph police were patrolling in the area of Wellington Street West and Gordon Street shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday when they reportedly saw a pickup truck travel through a red light.

After pulling over the truck, officers allegedly detected an odour of cannabis. When officers indicated they planned to search the vehicle, the male put it in drive and attempted to flee but stopped after officers pointed a conducted energy weapon at him.

The man was removed from the vehicle but continued to struggle with officers before he was formally arrested.

A search of the vehicle revealed quantities of suspected cocaine, methamphetamine, GHB and prescription opioids, along with a “large amount of drug paraphernalia consistent with trafficking” and four spring-loaded knives.
