Guelph police report that on Sunday a 55-year-old Guelph man was charged with theft under $5,000 and assault following an altercation outside a south end store.

Police say that at 2:20pm, an adult male allegedly placed an electronic door knob valued at $208 in his backpack while inside a store located near the intersection of Stone Road West and Edinburgh Road South

The male then proceeded to leave the store where he was confronted by the store’s adult male loss prevention officer (LPO). The male attempted to flee and a struggle ensued over the backpack. The male proceeded to punch the LPO in each of his forearms, say police. He eventually dropped the backpack and fled the area. The stolen property was recovered.

The LPO did not require medical attention.

Monday at 9:26 p.m., police found the male outside a residence located near the intersection of Speedvale Avenue East and Stevenson Street North. He was subsequently arrested.

He will appear in court on Nov. 9.
