Shoplifting investigation results in numerous charges

Suspect accused of fleeing police, running red light as officers attempted a traffic stop

On March 29, 2020 at 1 p.m., [it is alleged that] an adult male and an adult female shoplifted $28.70 worth of alcohol from a store located near the intersection of Paisley Road and Imperial Road South in the City of Guelph.

On April 5, at 5:20 a.m., police observed the male driving near the intersection of Woodlawn Road West and Arrow Road. The female was observed sitting in the passenger seat. The licence plate on the vehicle was not registered to the vehicle and the lights around the licence plate were out and not luminating the licence plate.

At 5:30 a.m., police attempted to initiate a traffic stop, however the vehicle refused to stop, accelerated to a high rate of speed and failed to stop for a red light. A pursuit was not initiated due to concerns for public safety.

On April 6, at 10:07 a.m., police found the male at a residence located near Wellington Road 32 and Speedvale Avenue West. He was subsequently arrested.

At 10:25 a.m., police found the female at a motel located near the intersection of Woolwich Street and Woodlawn Road East. She was subsequently arrested.

A 33-year-old male and a 32-year-old female, both from Guelph, have been charged with theft under $5,000.

The male has been additionally charged with:
    •    Fail to comply with undertaking
    •    Flight from police
    •    Dangerous operation
    •    Use plate not authorized for vehicle
    •    Improper number plate light
    •    Drive while under suspension

The male was held in custody pending a bail hearing on April 7.

The female will appear in court on July 21.
