CITY OF GUELPH - On May 17, 2017 at approximately 8:20 p.m., Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers received a report of a male removing a motor vehicle from storage without consent of the owner. The suspect was known to OPP and was currently wanted on a warrant stemming from an incident in January 2017.
On May 24, 2017 a member of the Wellington County OPP observed the vehicle, a grey Mitsubishi Eclipse, in a lot at 219 Silvercreek Pkwy. As police attempted to approach the vehicle the suspect fled in it with two passengers.
With the assistance of Guelph City Police the vehicle was located parked behind a retail store at 130 Silvercreek Pkwy. The accused had fled on foot.
With the assistance of Waterloo Regional Police Canine Unit the accused was subsequently located and arrested. A large quantity of suspected cocaine, MDMA and psilocybin was located on the accused as well as other drug paraphernalia.
The accused was also in possession of two prohibited weapons being a knife that can be opened by centrifugal force and a pair of brass knuckles.
26-year-old Nathan Sonoda of the Township of Puslinch is charged with:
- Escape lawful custody - Criminal Code (C.C.)
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle (C.C)
- Fail to comply with a probation order (C.C.)
- Take motor vehicle without consent (C.C.)
- Possess Schedule I substance (cocaine) for the purpose of trafficking - Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (C.D.S.A.)
- Possess Schedule I substance (M.D.M.A) for the purpose of trafficking (C.D.S.A.)
- Possess Schedule III substance (psilocybin) for the purpose of trafficking (C.D.S.A)
- Two counts of unauthorized possession of a weapon (C.C.)
Sonoda was held for bail court May 25, 2017 at the Guelph Criminal Court.
