Man arrested 'for his safety' charged with assault, resist arrest

On Sept. 20, 2019 at approximately 10:30 p.m., Guelph Police were alerted to an intoxicated man walking down Macdonell Street with an open bottle of alcohol.

The man was deemed to be unsafe on his own and police attempted to arrest him for his safety. The man [allegedly] became assaultive in an attempt to resist but after a short struggle was arrested. Further investigation determined that he was on a condition to not consume alcohol.

The 29-year-old Brampton man has been charged with assault with intent to resist arrest and breach OIC undertaking. He was also charged with public intoxication and possess liquor in other than licence premise/residence under the Liquor Licence Act.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
