Suspected repeat shoplifter recognized by store staff

On Feb. 5, 2018 at approximately 1:20 p.m., Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police were contacted by an employee from a local store who advised there was a male in their store that they recognized as being a suspect in a previous shoplifting incident from November.

OPP officers attended the area by which time the male had left the store. With the help of the description provided by the employees, officers located the male as he was leaving Mark's Work Warehouse at 900 Tower St. S.

The suspect was located in the possession of some more stolen property.

Forty-four-year-old Phillip Howarth of Hamilton has been charged with:

  • possession of stolen property obtained by crime under $5,000 
  • two counts of theft under $5,000 - shoplifting

He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on March 6, 2018.
