ELGIN COUNTY - The Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has seen a success when it comes to using analytics in policing. Since the beginning of 2017, six out of the nine impaired drivers arrested and charged in Elgin County have been located in predetermined spots throughout the County using analytics.

The OPP uses "Focused Patrols" and predictive analysis based on five-year trends as a way to maximize the deployment of resources thus ensuring the right resources are focused at the right place at the right time. This helps to reduce crime and victimization while increasing efficiencies.

Focused Patrols direct police officer presence to locations where the need for police services is greatest; for example, to areas with high crime rates or where a larger volume of calls for service are being experienced.

The Elgin County OPP would like to remind the motoring public that consuming alcohol in excess while operating a motor vehicle is a criminal offence. People being arrest for impaired driving face a 90 day administrative driver's licence suspension and a one week vehicle impoundment at the roadside.
