At approximately 9:45 p.m. on May 30, two women were putting some garbage out in the bin of their south end apartment building when they were approached by another male believed to be another tenant in the building.

Woman assaulted with a hammer

At approximately 9:45 p.m. on May 30, two women were putting some garbage out in the bin of their south end apartment building when they were approached by another male believed to be another tenant in the building. It seems that the male had an issue with the women using the garbage bins. The male then assaulted the two women and struck one of them with a hammer causing bones to be broken in her hands/wrist.  She is currently receiving hospital treatment for those injuries. The second woman was not injured.

On May 31, police located the responsible 30-year-old Guelph male and he was arrested for two counts of assault with a weapon and aggravated assault. He is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Speeding vehicle seized

On Wednesday, May 31, 2017, the Guelph Police Service’s Traffic Unit was monitoring traffic on Eastview Road. At approx. 12:38 p.m., a 2001 black Volkswagen Jetta was found to be travelling 116 km/h in a posted 60km/h zone. A 61-year-old Guelph resident was charged with speeding – 116km/h in a 60 km/h zone and stunt driving – drive at rate of speed 50km/h or more over speed limit. The vehicle being driven was impounded for a period of 7 days and the driver’s licence was seized for a period of 7 days as per statute.

Man with knife arrested

On the evening of May 31 , police were alerted to a man that was seen to have a knife in his possession while he was on a city bus. When police arrived to investigate, the knife was discovered and the male was also found to be in breach of release conditions from a previous criminal charge. He was arrested and also found to be in possession of a quantity of marihuana.

The 48-year-old man, of no fixed address, is charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, breach of a weapons prohibition order, two counts of breach of recognizance and drug possession. He was held in custody and will appear later today in bail court.

On May 31, 2017 the Guelph Police Service responded to 244 calls for service.
