Traffic initiative in Belwood nets 14 speeding charges

TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON - On July 2, 2020 members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Traffic Management Unit (TMU) conducted a Traffic Safety Targeted Enforcement Initiative in the Village of Belwood, Centre Wellington Township. This traffic safety initiative focused on speeding, aggressive driving, and unsafe commercial motor vehicles. This initiative was a direct result of concerns that were expressed regarding poor driver behavior from community members. 

As a result, the Wellington County OPP Traffic Management Unit assigned three officers to conduct high visibility enforcement in the area over the course of the day. This included one certified Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (C.V.S.A.) officer to conduct in depth and detailed commercial vehicle safety inspections in order to identify critical safety defects and violations pertaining to commercial motor vehicles. 

During the course of the traffic safety initiative, officers laid 23 charges. These charges included:

Speeding: 14

Operate Motor Vehicle Without Insurance: 1

Unsafe Moving Violation: 1

Various Commercial Vehicle Safety Related: 7  

The Wellington County OPP Commercial Vehicle Inspector was able to identify 4 commercial motor vehicles that appeared to be unsafe. As a result of full inspections, three of those commercial vehicles were taken out of service for critical safety defects. 

Wellington County OPP would like to thank the majority of the drivers that were observed operating their vehicles in a safe and respectful manner. Wellington County OPP will continue to conduct regular enforcement in the area in an effort to promote safe driving practices and address community concerns.
