Volunteer accused of taking business sim card, racking up $10K phone bill

Police say he used the sim card in question for several months

On Sept. 3, 2019 at 10:13 a.m., an adult male was volunteering at an organization located in the downtown core of the City of Guelph. As a volunteer, the male had access to a cellphone to notify staff of their client’s arrival. [It is alleged that] he removed the cell phone’s sim card and placed it in his own personal cell phone.

The male continued to use the sim card for his personal gain for several months which resulted in a bill of $10,657.82.

On Jan. 20, 2020 at 3:30 p.m., the male was arrested.

A 40-year-old Guelph male has been arrested for:
    •    Theft under $5,000
    •    Fraud over $5,000
    •    Unauthorized use of a computer

He will appear in court on Feb. 28, 2020.
