Wellington County OPP releases recent traffic charges

Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police releases traffic charges that took place between May 26 and May 30

Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to consolidate and streamline our notable offences and publish a single weekly release.

On May 26, at approximately 8:15 a.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a traffic stop of a green minivan on Domville Street in Arthur. As a result of the investigation, a 20-year-old driver from Arthur has been charged with driving while under suspension, failing to apply for a permit to become the owner and driving a motor vehicle without a license, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The driver was also charged with driving a vehicle with cannabis readily available, contrary to the Controlled Cannabis Act and operating a motor vehicle without insurance, contrary to the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act. The defendant will later appear in provincial offences court in Guelph.

On May 26, at approximately 3:15 p.m., a Wellington County OPP member monitored traffic on Highway 6, south of Arthur. A white sedan travelled well above the posted 80 km/hr speed limit. As a result of the investigation, a 57-year-old driver from Oakville has been charged with racing a motor vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The defendant will later appear in the provincial offences court in Guelph.

On May 26, at approximately 10:45 p.m., Wellington County OPP received a report of a suspicious red sedan on Tower Street South in Fergus. As a result of the investigation, Mitchell Johnathon Horne, 30, from Kincardine, has been charged with impaired driving and possession of a prohibited device, contrary to the Criminal Code. Further, they were charged with having care or control of a vehicle with cannabis readily available, contrary to the Controlled Cannabis Act and possession of methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The accused will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph at a later date.

On May 27, at approximately 10:45 a.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP initiated a traffic stop of a commercial motor vehicle on Getty Street in Elora. As a result of the investigation, a 62-year-old driver from Elora was charged with failing to accurately complete the daily inspection report, not covering on load and obstructing the plate, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. As a result of further investigation, a construction company from Fergus has been charged with failing to ensure that daily inspection reports are accurately completed, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

On May 28, at approximately 12:15 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP marine unit initiated a vessel stop on Belwood Lake, Township of Centre Wellington. As a result of the investigation, a 37-year-old operator from Palmerston was charged with Having Care or Control of a Boat with cannabis readily available, contrary to the Cannabis Act. Three passengers on the boat were also charged with personal floatation device violations.

On May 30, at approximately 10 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP was monitoring traffic on Highway 6, south of Fergus. A blue coupe was observed travelling well above the posted 80 km/hr speed limit. As a result of the investigation, a 26-year-old driver from Belwood has been charged with racing a motor vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The defendant is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Guelph later.

Anyone charged with impaired operation over 80 (mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood) or failing to comply with demand receives a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension and a 7-day vehicle impoundment.

Anyone charged with racing a motor vehicle receives a 14-day impoundment and a 30-day driver's licence suspension.
