Youth accused of driving more than 50 km/h over speed limit

Police say 17-year-old from Grand Valley was travelling 130 km/h in an 80 km/h zone

TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON - On Wednesday April 24, 2019 at approximately 12:45 p.m., a Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was monitoring traffic on Wellington Road 19 near Belwood Lake. 

The officer observed a vehicle travelling at a speed that appeared to be well above the posted 80 km/h speed limit. The vehicle was locked on radar in excess of 130 km/h, exceeding the posted speed limit by at least 50 km/h.

A 17-year-old driver from Grand Valley has been charged with race a motor vehicle contrary to the Highway Traffic Act and is scheduled to appear in Guelph Provincial Offences Court on June 19, 2019.

The driver's licence and vehicle were seized for a period of seven days as per statute. 

The identity of a young person is protected as required by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
