This past weekend, The Guelph Marlins, small but mighty qualified group of swimmers travelled to either the 14-18 year old Ontario Youth Junior Championships (OYJ) held in Etobicoke or the 13&under Ontario Festival Championships held in Markham, Ontario to compete against Ontario’s best swimmers.
Impressive races were seen by GMAC swimmers with most achieving either personal best times, new qualifying time standards, and/or medalling in some of their best events.
Matthew Marsella, 15 was awarded the 15 Year Old Male High Point Achiever at OYJ with his achievements of 1st place in 800 Free, 400IM, 400 Free and 3rd place in 200 Fly. Matthew’s success had lead him to achieving 4 Eastern Time Standards which will see him attending Easterns in Windsor in just a few short weeks.
Matthew’s teammate, Andrea Luberti, 15 also saw gold multiple times in her 100 Free, 200 Free, and 200IM and she too, has earned swims at Easterns and Ontario Swimming Championships. Zach de la Merced, 17, achieved a Silver in his 200IM as well as multiple top eight finishes.
Over at Festivals, the 13 & unders did not disappoint. Notably, Aly Laing, 10, achieved 1st place in 50 Fly, and earned 4 silvers in 100IM, 100 Back, 200 Back and 200IM.
Fynn O’Rourke also saw medals at Festivals by earning Bronze in both the 100 Back and 400 Free, and a silver in 200 Back which resulted in his first OYJ standard time.
Many Marlins swimmers are heading off to London this weekend for Western Ontario Short Course Regional Championships and we look forward to celebrating their successes.
