For over 40 years, 2nd Chance Employment Counselling (2nd Chance Employment) has been helping job seekers and employers alike both in Guelph and Wellington County. The organization offers individual employment supports, access to its employment resources and workshops that focus on interview skills, resume and cover letter writing, job search skills, using LinkedIn and the power of networking. At this time, workshops are being delivered via Zoom or in a one-on-one format, if needed.

The good news for job seekers is that certain industries are in demand and looking for qualified workers. Job Developer Coordinator Sue Gordon says, “We find that there are quite a few employers looking for employees in industries such as manufacturing, food service and retail. Hopefully the spring and summer will bring a further lift to restrictions, which will make is easier and safer for job seekers to find suitable work.”

Gordon points out that jobs in the trades continue to be in demand. “We have several construction and labour-type companies reaching out to us for those entry-level positions that have a huge potential for growth. Home builders and renovators are always looking for those eager to learn and get their hands dirty.”

Currently, job seekers can expect some employers to be flexible when it comes to working remotely or adjusting schedules to accommodate unique family needs. 2nd Chance Employment has noticed that the average starting wages are higher with most ‘non-service’, food or retail positions where the hourly rate falls in the $19 - $21/hr. range with minimum wage being $15/hr. across the board.

2nd Chance Employment also provides supportive, group-based programming for youth looking for employment. It offers provincially and federally funded programs, which are aimed at youth ages 15–30-years old. These programs provide pre-employment support and training and access to subsidized job placements.

Are you an employer looking for employees? Are you looking for work? Experienced staff at 2nd Chance Employment is ready to help! The organization serves youth, students and adults from their locations across Guelph and Wellington County.
