Having a painful foot issue like an ingrown toenail or a particularly nasty callus can really get in the way of living an active life. Luckily, there is help available.

According to Meghan Knox, a Canadian Certified Pedorthist as well as the clinic manager of BioPed Guelph, advanced footcare nurses help to keep their patients’ feet healthy and feeling great.

Advanced Foot Care Nurses Treat a Number of Issues

Advanced foot care nurses are regulated healthcare professionals with high end training in treating foot skin and nail conditions. They treat a wide range of issues for individuals of all ages that include:

  • Toenail care
  • Corn, callus, and wart removal
  • Fungal toenail treatment
  • Ingrown toenail prevention, trimming, and removal
  • Ingrown toenail bracing

“In some cases, a fungal nail goes undiagnosed for some time and it can get into the skin. We see a lot of people who try over-the-counter fungal nail treatments and nothing works until they see one of our advanced foot care nurses,” says Meghan.

Individuals with limited mobility, the elderly, and anyone prone to ingrown toenails should consider making an appointment to see an advanced foot care nurse regularly.

Diabetic Foot Care is Essential

Advanced foot care nurses also have extensive training in diabetic foot care and diabetic wound care. They offer preventative foot care solutions as well as wound/diabetic ulcer dressing.

“At BioPed we offer a full circle of diabetic foot care. Individuals with diabetes can see a footcare nurse who can perform a routine risk assessment and take care of any wounds they may have, we can monitor their foot structure and make sure they have proper footwear, and we can address any issues as soon as they occur,” explains Meghan.

She continues, “Our advanced foot care nurses closely monitor their patients who have diabetes to make sure that they don’t develop an ulcer that could eventually lead to something much more serious.”

Individualized Treatment Plans

In order for an advanced foot care nurse to properly treat their patients, they assess the issues and then develop an individualized treatment plan. They also educate their patients on proper foot care techniques as well as schedule follow-up appointments when necessary.
